About this concert

A leading exponent of Mozart, Handel and the French baroque, soprano Véronique Gens appears regularly at Aix-en-Provence and other major European venues. Not so long ago she was in London for the Royal Opera’s Niobe. But another focus of her life is mélodie, as featured here in her recital with American accompanist Susan Manoff.

Songs and Dances of Death

About this concert

In February 1840 Clara Wieck wrote to Schumann: ‘Dear Robert; if only I could see you again… I love you so much it hurts my heart’.
Soon after receiving Clara’s letter, the composer asked his publisher to prepare a special binding for a new song-cycle, Myrthen, fit for a wedding gift. Schumann’s unconstrained passion for Clara is ever present in his Op. 25 songs, crowned by what he described as the ‘near worship’ of ‘Du bist wie eine Blume’. Henk Neven’s recital interweaves Schumann’s searing emotions of love, the bitter pain of grief and the terrifying psychodramas of Musorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death.
This concert is part of Roger Vignoles: 'Perspectives' series.
